Did your mother (and grandmother) always tell you that you can’t do Navy with Black? Or that you can’t wear white jeans before Easter or after labor day? Or that Heels with shorts made you look a little…what would my grandmother have said? Questionable?
There have been so many rules in fashion for SO long…that everyone LIVED by! I honestly, think that is why you see EVERYTHING out there these days! Crop tops (which are actually really cute when done well...ie. Taylor Swift), jumpsuits, leotards (only okay on Beyonce, Katy Perry & Taylor Swift - DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME), and so much more!!
It’s a movement against the RULES OF FASHION!
We’ve come to an era where women don’t want to feel boxed in. We want to feel comfortable and beautiful…with as much ease as possible!! and like we didn’t have to put a ton of effort into looking that way ;)…because we all have WAY to many other things to do and worry about!
So what rules are breakable - and what should we still abide by?
1. Navy and black! Definitely a DO!!!
Navy and black, paired together, creates SUCH a chic look!! One of the hardest things about black is that you don’t want to pair it with bold colors (ie. red, yellow, green, bright blue)…just looks a little too 90’s!
So what then? We all know that neutrals go really well with black…but sometimes, you just want to look a little more unexpected than that…
Enter navy and black!! We’re talking a black leather skirt with a gorgeous navy silk blouse tucked in! Or black skinny jeans, that same navy silk blouse and a fabulous, long, gold necklace!
I promise…it will seem so simple when you put it on, but you will get more compliments than you ever expected! And who doesn’t love a good compliment now and again?
2. Suede and Leather in the Summer…Definitely a DO!
Okay, i’ll give it to you…it’s definitely a little harder to pull off int he South, BUT, they’re making SUPER light weight vegan and genuine (just depends on how much room is in your pocketbook;) suede and leather these days!! And in SUCH fun spring/summer colors…Think pale blue leather pants with a gorgeous cream or white sleeveless blouse…you’re dressed for any luncheon or business meeting! OR white jeans, a white button down and a light tan fabulous suede jacket with fringe!!!! AMAZING!
3. Mixing Gold and Silver
I know my grandmother DEFINITELY believed that you don’t mix the two…but why not?!? Diamond’s have a silver tone…and who wouldn’t mix diamonds and gold?!? I wear two rings every day…one silver, the other gold!! And have a watch that is two tone! And who knows what necklace and earrings I wear?!? But I can promise you that I NEVER pay attention to the color of the hardware! Just if the necklace lays right with my collar, and make sure that i don’t have on big earrings with a big necklace.
4. White All Year Round
Okay, I must admit, this is one I still have a hard time with…Hedy (my grandmother) and my mom’s voice are SO ingrained in my head (i think that might have been the point ;)…BUT white jeans are here to stay!! They have officially made the transition in jean lines from being in the summer shows to being a “Core Basic”…which are the jeans they produce year round!! And get ready…this fall white is EVERYWHERE!! Think white jeans with a gorgeous sand colored cashmere sweater and a great little pointy toe flat! OR White jeans with brown boots and that very same sand colored sweater!! Think beautiful neutrals…whites, grey, beige…A WAY more fun way to do neutrals than with black! AND, once again, much more unexpected!
5. Shorts and Heels
LOVE a good dressy short with a wedge or a heel! Not sure if ANY of you watch Hart of Dixie?!? I’m probably the only one with this guilty pleasure, but Dr. Zoe Hart (ie. Rachel Bilson) always has on the CUTEST shorts and heels outfits!! These are perfect for a fun dinner date with your husband (or tender date ;) LOVE the idea of a black dressy short, great little printed top and nude or black wedge or pump!
I do have two warnings here, though
1) Do NOT wear too high of heels! Or else you might look, like my grandmother would say, a little questionable ;)
2) This is only for our readers under a certain age - I will not state that age, because it truly varies…dependent upon how young of a __-something you are! BUT, if you feel like you have hit the age where you can’t do shorter shorts anymore, this is probably not for you!
A few other do’s, that have absolutely nothing to do with fashion!!
1. Real sugar
2. Long Bubble Bath’s
3. A little gardening
4. Re-painting furniture
5. Napping on Sunday afternoons
